  21. I agree that a surface test was the wrong thing to do.  This sounds like a SCSI bus
  22. problem, not a surface problem.  Furthermore, if they didn't find any defects,
  23. they didn't run the test right.  Modern drives ALL have defects found at the
  24. factory, but new defects after that are rare.  The microcode hides all the old
  25. defects from the PC, and will try real hard to hide new defects (if the microcode
  26. has trouble reading from a given sector, but can eventually read sucessfully,
  27. it can spare out the sector, and the PC will never know.  The PC only finds about
  28. it about if:

  30. - The data cannot be sucessfully read after the microcode trys lots of tricks

  32. - or the PC pgm is smart enough to read the defect tables.
